Nació en Nantes en 1880. Fue considerado como el padre del realismo mágico. Su primera exposición dentro del surrealismo fue en la Galerie Pierre en 1925, influenciado por Henri Rousseau y De Chirico. Su obra está llena de detalles meticulosos llenas de escenas y objetos creando un contexto natural, distorsionado y combinado con sueños fantásticos. Se calcula que pintó cerca de 200 cuadros. Falleció en 1950.
