2 Born in 1843 in Rome to Austrian parents,
Eugene de Blaas was the son and student of the painter Karl von Blaas
(1815-1894), who was a teacher at the Academy of Rome and at the Academy
of Venice. Eugene Von Blass specialized in figure paintings. His favorite motif was the daily life of the Venetian fisherfolk. He rendered the details of their picturesque costumes and dwellings with tremendous symathy. His precise technique and vibrant colors were greatly admired. The artist was the son and student of Karl Von Blass (1815-1894), a leading Austrian history and fresco painter of the late Biedermeier period. Karl had studied at the Academies of Rome and Venice, then both cities within the Austrian Empire, where he was later to become a professor. Karl had another son, Julius, who was also a painter of animal and military subjects. Eugene Von Blass had an international exhibiting career. Von Blass was a regular exhibitor to the Esposizione Nationale exhibitions in Venice and the Jubilaums Austellungs held in Vienna and Munich. He also showed his paintings at the Royal Academy, the Grafton Gallery and the New Gallery in London between 1875 and 1892. His parents were Austrian, and father Karl von Blaas was a well known historical painter. Von Blass was an early student of his father. He then went on to study at the Academy of Rome and the Academy of Venice, choosing to paint picturesque aspects of the lives of fishermen in Venice. These works often concentrated on images of female beauty, capturing the marvelous facial line and skin tone of the model. Von Blaas painted in both oil and watercolor, using both mediums with great skill. He exhibited from 1875 to 1892 at the Grafton Gallery at the Royal Academy and at The New Gallery in London.
